Dental Disease
Does your pet have bad breath?
By the age of 3, more than 80% of pet cats and dogs will have dental disease.
The early signs of dental issues may include bad breath, yellow tartar on the teeth and red gums.
Ignoring dental disease can lead to a number of serious health conditions and can also mean that your pet’s teeth become painful.
At Clayfield Vet Clinic, we use the most up to date dental equipment.
This includes the capacity to take dental xrays, an essential tool in assessing the viability of teeth when you consider that we only see about 1/3 of any given tooth and the other 2/3s of the tooth are below the gum margin.
We have gold standard equipment for the cleaning, polishing and, where necessary, extraction of teeth.
Dentistry for your pets does require a General Anaesthetic. It is impossible to obtain xrays, remove teeth or do the necessary cleaning of plaque from beneath the gum line without anaesthesia in a pet.
Anaesthesia is much safer than you may think. We can screen your pet for underlying disease prior to the anaesthetic. During the procedure, your pet is continually monitored by one of our trained Veterinary Nurses and is actively warmed. Your pet rests comfortably whilst our Veterinarians perform a thorough and proper dental cleaning.
There are a several dental specific diets and chews that are designed to help remove tartar.
Brushing your pet’s teeth is also an option as are additives to water.
