Healthy Mouth

What is it ?

Healthymouth is a water additive that helps reduce the formation of plaque on your pets teeth. Clinical trials have demonstrated  a potential reduction of 81% in cats, and 76% in dogs.

Why is this important?

Plaque is the first stage in the development of periodontal (gum) disease. It is a slime of food, bacteria and saliva that forms on the tooth and in the space under the free gum edge. The body reacts to the presence of the bacteria causing inflammation – gingivitis. Within 2 days of plaque forming on the tooth, it starts to combine with minerals from the saliva to form a concrete like substance – tartar. The whole process is progressive. Without intervention, more plaque and hence more tartar forms. This triggers more and more inflammation, which leads to progressive destruction of the gum tissue, and subsequent loss of the bone of the tooth sockets. Eventually, the tooth will be lost.

Think of it like this; managing periodontal disease is like a war. The soldiers we are fighting are the bacteria. They hide in and behind a fortress – the tartar. Once tartar has formed, removal of the plaque becomes much more problematic.

The big problem, however, is not the tooth loss. Dogs and cats can live normal and pain free lives without any teeth. The problem is the chronic infection and inflammation that is associated with periodontal disease. The bacteria in the plaque, and the by-products of the inflammatory process affect many parts of the body, not just the mouth. Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease, kidney disease and liver disease. It can also be painful and cause notably foul breath. Ironically it is often the latter, a purely cosmetic problem, that is often noticed first by many pet owners.

What is in Healthymouth?

Healthymouth contains 100% human grade ingredients. Importantly, it contains no xylitol  and no alcohol or sugar. Some people drink Healthymouth – others prefer to drink the parallel human product available in USA – Dentilicious.

How does Healthymouth work?

Good question. Whilst all the ingredients in Healthymouth have a recognised action or function, how they all work together is not entirely clear. What is clear is that it does work – this is supported by the trial (multiple) results, the VOHC seals of approval, and its USA patent.

What does Healthymouth NOT do?

Healthymouth does not treat existing disease. If there is plaque or tartar present in your pets mouth, it will not make it go away. Healthymouth does not fully prevent the formation of plaque – there is still a need and a benefit to employ other mechanisms of plaque prevention such as daily brushing or VOHC accepted diets (Hills T/D) and chews. And still, plaque will form, tartar will follow, and most pets in their lifetime will benefit from a professional dental treatment under anaesthesia.

Think of it like this; we brush our teeth 2-3 times a day plus we floss and gargle and yet every 6-9 months we visit our dentist who spends the better part of an hour scaling and polishing our teeth to remove the accumulated plaque and tartar that our oral hygiene routine has failed to prevent. It is not a case of either/or – either you brush your teeth, or you go to the dentist. Both are required for optimal oral health.

It is important to have realistic expectations of the products or methods that you use to reduce plaque. Ultimately, the more methods you employ, the less professional intervention will be required. Daily brushing remains the gold standard for plaque prevention. Remember, 99% of pet owners will not brush their pets teeth, but 100% of pet owners provide drinking water for their pets every day.

When should I start my pet on Healthymouth?

Healthymouth is best started before periodontal disease begins, or shortly before a professional scale and polish is done.

What if my pet won’t drink Healthymouth

Although many pets will accept Healthymouth immediately, some will require gradual introduction of the product. It is worth persevering and if need be hastening slowly. If, ultimately, you cannot get your pet to accept Healthymouth, it comes with a 100% moneyback guarantee. You can call our clinic for extra advice.
